Atomic Bomberman

continued

exploiting the possibilities
The best new feature of Atomic Bomberman is the ability to play ten-person matches. Purists will be glad to know they can huddle ten people around a single PC using the keyboard and a fancy joystick system like the Gravis GriP or nine linked SideWinder gamepads. Meanwhile, extremists will be thrilled with the option to play with up to ten people over an IPX network or modem. Multiplayer games over the network can slow down severely, however, and the lag can cause accidental deaths. Atomic Bomberman(The CNET Insurance Company estimates that 65 percent of all Internet fatalities are caused by excessive lag.) So, even though Atomic Bomberman should work over the Internet via Kali, don't expect top performance in large multiplayer games.

One oversight in network mode is the ability to chat. Of course, there is no time to chat during a game, but it would be nice during setup or in between matches. As a consolation, Interplay has included a basic level designer, which will give this timeless game even greater longevity.

Just as Jackie Chan has finally made the transition to Hollywood, Bomberman has finally made the transition to the PC. However, the console market is decidedly different than Floppywood. While SNES fans have every right to go gaga over multiplayer games, they are commonplace on the PC and less likely to excite. Therefore Bomberman's limited scope may not appeal to those PC gamers hooked on the latest and greatest multiplayer games. Then again, Atomic Bomberman is the most fun gamers can have in one minute and is a must for any Bomberfan. If you've never played before and have been looking for a simple and addictive multiplayer game, pick it up. Again, it's like a Jackie Chan movie: low on plot, high on action, no love scenes, and they do all their own stunts.

tips
-When somebody sets a bomb to blow up a single block, wait on the other side and steal their prize.
-A bomb will explode if the flame from another bomb hits it. Use the detonation time change to your advantage.
-Viruses disappear when you grab a power-up, so don't be afraid to run over a virus on your way to some nearby swag.

Hugh Falk started writing for Gamecenter in March of 1996. Since that time, Internet usage has grown over 340,000 percent. Although most people believe these facts are merely coincidental, they have gathered little supporting data. Agree or disagree with the review? Let us know.
